Why We Need Right to Try 2.0

What is the Right to Try for Individualized Treatments?

The Right to Try movement is a patient-centered approach to healthcare. The Right to Try for Individualized Treatments is a law that builds on the success of the original Right to Try law (enacted in 2018) by expanding access to innovative, individualized treatments tailored to a person's unique genetic makeup. This reform allows patients with rare conditions, who have considered all approved options, to work with their doctors to pursue promising, personalized therapies. At its core, Right to Try empowers individuals to make their own informed decisions about their healthcare journey, giving them the freedom to fight for their lives without unnecessary government interference.

No Time To Waste

Imagine hearing devastating news about your child’s health and knowing that a potentially lifesaving treatment exists, but that bureaucratic red tape is keeping it just beyond your reach. This was the harsh reality for Kendra Riley, an Arizona mother of three who faced a heart-wrenching race against time to save her infant daughter Keira.
“ Patients like my daughter do not have time to waste. Luckily, there is a solution that policymakers can implement to give patients hope now: the Right to Try for Individualized Treatments. ”

Rare Diseases, Groundbreaking Treatments

Approximately 80% of rare and ultrarare diseases are estimated to be genetic in nature, according to the Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases and the journal Nature. Therefore, it is no surprise that access to innovative, individualized gene therapies is top of mind for patients and families impacted by these conditions.

Fortunately, new technologies and recent advances in modern medicine have made it possible for researchers to tailor treatments to an individual patient using his or her own genetics.
The Right to Try for Individualized Treatments protects the right of patients like Eiljah Stacy to pursue these customized treatments at the recommendation of their physicians and in concert with strong patient protections.
